Prince George’s County Urges Preventive Pet Vaccinations

LARGO, MD – The Prince George’s County Department of Environmental Resources’ (DER) Animal Management Group (AMG) urges responsible pet owners to have their pets vaccinated on a regular basis to prevent the onset of viral diseases such as Distemper, Parvovirus, and Rabies.

“We have noticed an increase in viral illnesses of dogs throughout the County,” says Chief Rodney Taylor, Associate Director of the Animal Management Group. “It is important for pet owners to take preventive measures in protecting their dogs against these common deadly diseases.”

Chief Taylor recommends that pet owners start protecting their dogs at an early age and that they adhere to the recommended vaccination schedule provided by their veterinarian. If your dog has not been vaccinated for Rabies or Parvovirus and Distemper, AMG strongly encourages you to take it to your local veterinarian for its vaccinations. The Prince George’s SPCA offers Rabies shots for $8 and Parvo and Distemper (DHLPP) shots for $12 on the first Sunday of every month at 8210 D’Arcy Road, Forestville, MD from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. No appointment is necessary.

In the event your pet becomes infected with any viral illness, AMG encourages you to not bring the pet to the Prince George’s County Animal Services Facility for surrender and that you immediately contact a local veterinarian for proper care and treatment. Listed below are some additional recommendations to help prevent the spread of the disease:

• Keep the infected dog isolated from all other pets;
• Clean up the dog’s stools in your yard;
• Use chlorine bleach and water to clean food and water bowls (make sure bowls are rinsed well after cleaning with bleach);
• Wash the bedding with a bleach solution and hot water; and
• Disinfect any other areas where the pet has been such as the linoleum, concrete kennels, crates, etc.

What is UMD Alerts?

UMD Alerts is a software application used to send emergency alerts, notifications and updates to your cell phone, pager, BlackBerry, PDA and / or e-mail account. In the event of an emergency such as a fire, tornado, campus closing, a Virginia Tech or September 11th-type attack, important alerts and updates will be sent right to your cell phone or mobile device. All you have to do is sign up for a UMD Alerts account. (UMD Alerts is a free service offered by the University of Maryland. Your wireless carrier may charge you a fee to receive messages on your wireless device.)

What types of alerts will be sent?

Alert types may include life safety, assaults, fire, weather, accidents involving utilities or roadways, team activation notifications, or disaster notification such as a terrorist attack, tornado, hurricane, and more. A few examples of the types of messages that can be sent through UMD Alerts are:

Emergency Situations:

• Notify employees, and / or citizens of the location of the nearest emergency shelter, available bed space, hours of operation during a crisis
• Notify employees / citizens of available evacuation routes during an emergency
• Activate special teams within the community, based upon an event

Precautionary Warnings:

• Severe weather warnings
• Change in the Homeland Security Advisory System terror alert level
• Pre-cautionary evacuation order if on high alert

Parking

Visitor parking is available, but very limited during research hours. Parking spaces in the garage area fill very quickly.

If you intend to drive and park, please note:

• The parking garage opens to the public at 8:00 AM.
• A security officer will:
  • Check your photo identification (all visitors must present photo ID)
  • Direct you to the second entrance of the parking garage
  • Provide you with a daily parking permit and instructions on parking.
• Overnight parking is not permitted.
• If the Homeland Security Advisory System (HSAS) is raised to the level “Orange” or higher, additional security screening procedures may significantly delay entrance of passenger vehicles.
